Airbnbs Hosted By Clowns and Other December 2019 Expenses

This month was perhaps one of my favorites of the year.

We Adopted a Cat

In October, we started fostering a kitten. I wrote about the experience in November, and December 16th was the date we had to decide whether to keep him or let him go up for adoption. We ended up adopting MechaniCat from the local shelter, deciding to risk the limited renting options when we move. I prefer to think of it as a foster win ? (as opposed to the more commonly known ‘foster fail’).

I Flew To Portland, OR

Near the beginning of the month, I went to Portland on a business trip.

I got there a couple days early to meet up with one of my best friends from high school, and we stayed in an Airbnb hosted by real-life clowns (#SoPortland).

On Sunday I went to a personal finance meet up to see A Purple Life, Burrito Bowl Diaries, That Frugal Pharmacist, and some non-bloggers.

I Went Home For The Holidays

After another week of work, I jetted off to Denver, Colorado for the holidays. We went skiing for a few days and then came home to enjoy all of the Christmas traditions.

We had two gorgeous days on the slopes

All-in-all, a lot happened this month! I’m curious to see how it all shook out in my expenses for this month.

Note: This is the spending for just me. I report expenses when I pay them, so you may not see insurance or other bills that I pay in full when I receive them.

$251My Christmas present to myself before all the travel I would be doing at the end of the year. I got a small discount on them.
Groceries$86We had a light grocery load this month because I was traveling for work one week and with family another week. Mr. Mechanic made another Trader Joe’s run so our freezer is fully stocked.
Restaurants$73I ate out a ton this month and work covered most of the expense. However, I still managed to spend a fair amount while going out with friends.

I also grabbed a meal on my layover to Denver and some food at the lodge while skiing.

Skiing$63This is the amount to rent equipment (skis, boots, poles, helmet) for 2 days with a 15% off coupon. I left most of my ski gear in storage when we moved. My dad bought tickets in bulk to Loveland Ski Resort (thanks, Dad!)
Alcohol$42We bought some wine to make Coq au Vin, I picked up a six pack of craft Avery beer to see if I like it as much as I did a few years ago. The rest was all socializing in Portland.
Pet$35Our adoption fee was $50 ($25 each) which included flea treatments, neutering, booster shots, and eye antibiotics.

As I mentioned in my article about fostering our cat, all food, litter, and other items were provided by the shelter for the first 2 months. These ran out, so we bought another bag of food and litter. We will need to shop around for bulk deals.

Gifts$30I bought gifts for people throughout the year, so this line item is actually tiny considering it includes Christmas gifts. I also bought an interactive toy (affiliate link) for the cat and since it was discretionary I put it in this category.
EZ-Pass$12.50I bought an EZ-Pass ($25 total, $12.50 each) to make travel on the New York highways easier. So far I have always been lucky enough to have had cash on hand at the toll roads, but I generally don’t carry cash.
Charity$20I gave $20 to my childhood church while home. I’m proud to be part of a church that not only preaches inclusivity but practices it as well. As a kid, I participated in the programs to feed and clothe those in need, so I felt comfortable adding my small monetary contribution this year.
Misc$42I forgot to pack a hairbrush and bought a new one. I also bought myself a souvenir in Portland.

While I thought this would be a light month due to a week of travel and a week of being home, it seems that this month my spending was rather high.

I did have a great time socializing with friends, skiing, and spending time with family. I’m sure this report would be much higher without my parents feeding us for a week!

Other thoughts: I want to keep an eye on that alcohol line item as it is way higher than I would like it to be. Fuel is conspicuously absent as we didn’t drive much at all this month.

We made a stop in beautiful Georgetown on the way to the mountains.
