Turkish Coffee and other October 2020 Expenses

October Expenses

My October expense report is coming late this month. A lot happened in October, which I will likely write about in the future, but is too much to cover in one report. However, I’m not one to break a streak so here is the expense report for October!

Note: This is the spending for just me. I report expenses when I pay them, so you may not see insurance or other bills until the month that I pay them.

ItemAmountMechanic Musings
Pet care$109As a long-term pet owner I’ve never had to deal with dreaded fleas… but apparently Santa Barbara is home to a resilient flea population that is immune to over-the-counter treatment. I took MechaniCat to the vet and he is now happy and flea-free.

Clothes$138I broke my nearly 2 year clothing ban to buy myself a dress as we were going to have professional photos taken. First I tried out the local Buy Nothing group and one woman generously lent me 2 dresses, but unfortunately they did not fit me well. After some back-and-forth I finally just decided to order a dress online, and also picked up some shoes from Goodwill.
Professional Photos$100A local student took the photos and they came out great!

Medical$100Annual check-up and some over the counter treatments.
Haircut$55Also in the name of professional photos I decided to go ahead and get my hair cut. I called ahead and was told it would be $35, but it turned out that my hair was so difficult and it took so long that the final cost was more than I first expected. However, I was glad to have a professional cut after years of doing it myself.
Travel$55Flights and parking
Restaurants$35Breakfast for dinner, tacos, and ice cream. I also got some baklava and Turkish coffee on a whim

Heating & Electric bill$11
Total$2,183I spent $863 on things other than rent this month, which isn’t too bad.

What about you?

Have you paid for professional photography?

Did you do anything fun for a socially-distanced Halloween?

  1. Ugh, fleas. We have never had them with our cats but my university roommate had a cat that ended up with fleas and it was miserable for all of us (including the cat). I bet MechaniCat is feeling much better!

Only professional photos I have ever paid for were our engagement/wedding photos! When I worked at the newspaper, the photographers there did take some photos for different things, but they were always free. Getting new headshots has been on my to do list for AGES, though.

    1. I’m glad you’ve never had to deal with them for your cats! Yes headshots are the ones that sometimes happen at a conference but I’ve started to wonder if it’d be worth getting some taken. Looking forward to yours if you get them done!

  2. Honestly, I don’t even know what we would do if our cats got them. Lyla (our older cat) would likely cooperate enough to let us help her but our youngest? It would be a challenge haha. Am thinking 2021 might be the year for some headshots…well, depending on what’s going on in the world at that time. It still feels so difficult to make even the smallest of plans right now. Wha a weird world we live in.

  3. Awesome spending report. I did pay for professional photography for our wedding and engagement photos. For our engagement photos, I was able to find a deal in Groupon. For $35, we were able to get a 30 minute session and 3 digital copies. The photographer tried to sell us more photos, but we really only need a couple for save the date

  4. Glad you wound up supporting a local student—I’m sure it’s a valuable opportunity for them. And of course, MechaniCat got some well-deserved love 🙂

Looks like the photo(s) came out great, I hope you were able to have some fun with it and perhaps can still find some value in them.

One of my best friends is in Pasadena (moved out there around 2018), so Jenni and I are sometimes out that way. In fact, our last trip right before COVID blew up was out to LA back in January. Hopefully post-COVID we’ll be able to come out that way and catch some of the coastal scenery and have a turkish coffee!

    Hope you’re doing alright.

    1. I would love to get some Turkish coffee with you and Jenni the next time you’re in this general area! Also love to explore the beaches and hikes along the coast as well. Crossing my fingers that post-COVID comes sooner rather than later 🙂
